In the midst of criticism and social media reaction, Priyanka Chopra has apologised for her role in the CBS show The Activist. The criticism has "moved" her, she claimed. She said that the programme "got it wrong" and that “sorry that my participation in it disappointed many of you”.
CBS had already announced a format change for The Activist. It will be turned into a one-time documentary rather than a competition show.
“I’m happy to know that in this new format, their stories will be the highlight, and I’m proud to collaborate with partners who have their ear to the ground and know when it’s time to hit pause and re-evaluate,” Priyanka said.
The Activist includes six "inspiring activists" who will collaborate with three popular celebrities, including Usher, Priyanka Chopra, and Julianne Hough. The news was received with shock, ridicule, and, in some cases, outright disbelief. Many people accused the filmmakers of engaging in "performance activism" and turning protest into cheap entertainment.
Priyanka went on to praise the "global community of activists who fight the struggle every single day and invest their blood, sweat, and tears into making change, but they are rarely recognised or acknowledged," according to her.
“Their work is crucial, and they, too, deserve to be acknowledged and applauded. “I want to thank each and every one of you for what you do,” she said.
Julianne Houghton had already responded to the criticism in a note. “The last few days have been a powerful demonstration of real-time activism. Thank you for using your voices, calling me in, your accountability, and your candor. I am deeply listening with an open heart and mind,” she had written.
However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day. The push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort.”
Not only had the organisation apologised to real activists, but it had also apologised to the show's hosts, who had been dragged through the dirt for associating themselves with the show.
