On September 14, a first-year student, Jashandeep Kour, passed away after being brought home to Chauke village in Bathinda district due to illness.
This unfortunate event led to allegations against a professor in the Punjabi department, triggering protests by the university’s students outside the office of Vice Chancellor Professor Arvind.
According to Jashandeep’s brother, Jagseer Singh, she had been granted a brief leave from her studies due to her illness. She was brought home from campus on Wednesday and received medical care in the village, but sadly, she passed away during the night.
Her family believes that the professor in question was uncooperative and did not grant her the necessary leave.
Students at the university began protesting, accusing the professor of mistreatment. Raman, a student in a diploma course, conveyed the students’ demand for the university to take action against the professor.

The Director of Public Relations, Daljit Ami, stated that the university was holding a meeting to address the situation.
In response to the allegations, Professor Surjit, in charge of the five-year integrated language course, refuted the claims, asserting that they were baseless.
He explained that Jashandeep suffered from asthma and that her parents had withdrawn her admission two years ago due to her health condition. She had been granted leave for medical treatment with his consent.
Vice Chancellor Professor Arvind clarified that Jashandeep’s health had been deteriorating due to her chronic illness. She had received initial medical attention at the campus health center before her parents took her home at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Vice Chancellor stated that, as of their investigations, they had not found any evidence to support the students’ allegations, emphasizing Jashandeep’s chronic health condition as a significant factor in this tragic event.
