Following a one-sided victory in the Jalandhar West bye-elections in Punjab, the state's Chief Minister, Bhagwant Singh Mann, will be arriving in Jalandhar today to meet with state employees, ministers, and MLAs. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann will also express his gratitude to the individuals and authorities who contributed to the bye-elections. Then CM Mann will host a gathering for volunteers, bureaucrats, and MLAs at his residence. Many official plans surrounding this have not yet been made public.
The Jalandhar West constituency saw by-elections on July 10, the results of which were declared on July 13. Mohinder Bhagat, the son of former BJP minister Chunni Lal Bhagat, was chosen as the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) candidate. Bhagat won by a significant margin in the results that were announced yesterday. With over 37,000 votes, Mohinder Bhagat defeated Sheetal Angural, who defected from the Aam Aadmi Party and joined the BJP. This is the West constituency's greatest victory to date in such a circumstance.
Formerly an MLA for the AAP in the West constituency, Sheetal Angural joined the BJP in time for the Lok Sabha elections. Angural handed in his notice of resignation. Even though Angural later sought to rescind his resignation, it had already been accepted at that point. The Election Commission then declared that there will be bye-elections in the west constituency.
Bhagat's win was one-sided as he was leading from the initial round of counting. Angural polled 17,921 votes, while Congress candidate Surinder Kaur, the former senior Deputy Mayor of Jalandhar, finished third with 16,757 votes, as per the Election Commission of India. Mohinder Bhagat won the polls by 37,325 votes, polling 55,246 votes.
