With India in the last week of April, the summer season has started to make life difficult for common people. Punjab and other parts of North India have witnessed scorching heat with temperatures in many districts soaring past 40°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), before the start of April, had warned that Punjab would witness above normal heatwave days between April to June. And, now it seems like the IMD's warning is turning out to be true. IMD Chandigarh has issued an alert according to which multiple districts of Punjab will witness 'loo' and heatwave for the next 5 days. 

As per IMD, Punjab recorded a spike of 0.7°C in the average maximum temperature on Thursday, making it a scorching 3.5°C above normal. As per the daily temperature briefing issued by IMD Chandigari, Patiala sizzled at 41.3°C, the highest in the region

IMD issues loo warning in Punjab

The weather department has issued yellow alerts for several districts as heatwave-like conditions, or Loo, are expected to persist over the next five days. On April 25, Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, and Sangrur are under Loo watch. The warning extends from April 26 to 29 in southwestern Punjab, including Firozpur.

Punjab may get respite from heatwave with rainfall on April 30

While the next few days will remain punishingly hot, the IMD hints at a potential shift in the weather pattern. Light rainfall is expected around April 30, which could bring some much-needed relief. However, no official weather alert for rain has been issued yet.
