In a key development, the fate of 4 prominent ADGPs has been dangling mid-air after Punjab's Home Department halted their promotions. The 4 ADGPs have been notified by the Home Department that currently there are only 2 Cadre posts of the DGP available. Of the two Cadres' posts one is soon going to be vacant after retirement, however, the other one will not be vacant as the retirement has not arrived. The 4 ADGPs namely are- Sharad Satya Chauhan, Gaurav Yadav, Kuldeep Singh, and Harpreet Singh Sidhu.
Sharad Satya Chauhan, Gaurav Yadav, Kuldeep Singh, and Harpreet Singh Sidhu belong to the batch of 1992 and they were likely to be promoted to the DGP post this year. In fact, in the past 2 months, 4 DGPs have taken their retirement, as a result, the speculation of the 4 ADGPs promotion was high. With only one Cadre seat available, only one among the four will be promoted to the DGP rank. In general, an entire Batch of officers gets promoted, not only one officer. Among the four ADGPs, the name of Sharad Satya Chauhan is at the top and is likely to get the office.
Only one among the four will be promoted resulting in the non-promotion of the other three. As a result, the promotions of the 4 AGDPs have been put on hold. Now, the file is likely to be sent to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and he has the power to overrule the Home Department's decision.
It is pertinent to mention here that this will not be the first time CM will overrule the noting of the Home Department. Notably, the file is yet to be sent to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann. If the issue of promotion of the 4 ADGPs will not get resolved, its impact will also be on IPS Officers belonging to the batches of 1993 and 1994. This means, that if the 4 ADGPs of the 1992 batch do not get promoted then many IPS Officers of the 1993 and 1994 batches will have to remain ADGPs.
