Punjab: Foreign currency worth Rs. 1.52 crores seized by DRI from Amritsar & Chandigarh Airport

Accused were arrested and produced before the court after which they were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

As per latest development from Ludhiana, The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has foiled back-to-back two attempts of groups attempting to smuggle foreign currency out of India. Currency worth Rs. 1.52 crores being carried by Indian citizens was seized at Amritsar and Chandigarh Airport while the accused were ready to board their flight.

Reportedly, two arrests have also been made by DRI regarding this case. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence received a tip-off regarding foreign currency being smuggled from Punjab post which on orders of Additional Director General, Nitin Saini whole operation was carried out on November 12, 2022. Information received reveals that first accused was held at Shri Guru Ram Das Ji Airport in Amritsar while the other was arrested while he was about to board a flight from Chandigarh International Airport.

During investigation and checking of luggage, DRI seized foreign currency worth Rs 44 lakh which was concealed in bags having special cavities. Both arrested were to fly to United Arab Emirates carrying smuggled foreign currency illegally hidden in bags.

A source privy to the DRI operations said, "On the instructions of Additional Director General (ADG) Nitin Saini, the regional unit of DRI launched a major operation at Amritsar airport on November 12. In action, two persons traveling to Dubai were arrested from inside the airport with whom foreign currency worth 1.5 crores rupees were recovered. Both the accused were arrested and produced before the court after which they were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.”
