The Punjab government has declared winter vacations for all government and private schools in the state, providing much-needed relief to students and staff from the intensifying cold. The holiday period will extend from December 24, 2024, to December 31, 2024. Schools are scheduled to reopen on January 1, 2025, resuming normal academic activities.
Weather conditions leading to the decision
The announcement follows a recent report from the meteorological department which predicted a further drop in temperatures. Snowfall and rain in higher altitudes are expected until December 10 hour already contributing to cooler conditions in the plains.
In recent days Punjab has experienced a dip in mercury levels with temperatures falling to 1.6°C in parts of the state and 2.6°C in Chandigarh. The weather department has also forecast rain in several districts which could intensify the chilling in the upcoming days.
“The cold wave is likely to strengthen as winter progresses and this precautionary break will ensure the health and safety of school-going children,” added a senior weather official.
Relief for students and teachers
Parents, teachers, and students have welcomed it as it aligned and dissipated harsh winter conditions. With heavy woollen already unnecessary the break will now allow children to stay indoors and avoid exposure to the betting cold.
Many families planned to use this time for holiday travel while otherwise relaxing and recharging before the final stretch of the academic year.
Schools gear up for reopening
As schools prepare for the reopening on January 1, 2025 authorities have emphasized ensuring that classrooms are well-heated and students are adequately protected upon their return. The education department has urged children to dress warmly when school resumes.
