Punjab Government on Tuesday announced the extension of school holidays keeping the winter season in mind. All government and private schools are currently closed due to winter vacations. Punjab Education Minister Harjit Singh Bains on Tuesday took to his X handle and announced school winter vacations.

Harjot Singh Bains wrote, "(Translated version) As per the directions of the Hon'ble Chief Minister, due to cold weather, holidays are being observed in all government, aided, recognized and private schools of Punjab till January 7. All schools will open on January 8."

The Punjab government had initially announced winter vacations for schools until December 31. However, the persistent cold wave has raised concerns among parents, teachers, and students. An orange alert has been issued across Punjab due to dense fog and biting cold brought on by a cyclonic system near the region. Adding to the weather woes, a Western Disturbance is expected to become active between January 1 and 6. The Western Disturbance is likely to bring rain to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of the plains, including Punjab and Chandigarh.

Notably, Apple Weather App predicts that Jalandhar and Ludhiana may witness rainfall in the first week of January 2025.
