'Avoid gatherings, use masks': Punjab health minister urges people to take precautions amid HMPV outbreak

Punjab’s health department is on high alert following central government directives to enhance surveillance against the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The virus, which causes flu-like symptoms, has not been reported in Punjab yet, but Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh has advised the public to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Key advisory wear masks in public 

Dr Balbir Singh has urged people to wear masks when stepping out of particularly crowded places. He emphasized that individuals with asthma or other respiratory illnesses should avoid public gatherings. “This virus is not as severe as COVID-19. It is a mild virus causing flu-like symptoms and is not life-threatening,” he assured.  

Punjab’s preparedness 

The health department has ramped up its readiness to tackle any situation. Doctors across the state have been put on alert, and advisories have been issued to ensure quick response and treatment. Importantly, the government has pledged that all the treatments related to HMPV will be provided free of charge in the stat

“We have learned valuable lessons from COVID-19 and are fully prepared. There is no need to panic,” said Dr. Balbir Singh, adding that the government is in close coordination with the central authorities to monitor the situation. 

Central government’s surveillance measures 

The central government has highlighted India's robot surveillance system for influenza-like illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) through ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and IDSP (Integrated Diseases Surveillance Programme). Current data indicated no usual spikes in ILI or SARI cases. However, as a precaution, ICMR plans to increase the number of labs testing for HMPV and will monitor the virus throughout the year. 

Precautionary measures for vulnerable groups 

Dr. Balbir Singh has advised children, senior citizens, and people with weak immunity to wear masks and avoid crowded places. “People shouldn't fear this virus. We are well-equipped to handle any eventually, and all steps are being taken to ensure public health and safety,” he said. 

Free treatment for all

The Punjab, Health Department has assured that all medical care related to HMPV will be completely free in Punjab. Dr. Balbir reiterated that while the virus is not new or deadly individuals with respiratory conditions should exercise caution. 

Symptoms and spread of HMPV 

HMPV primarily affects children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immunity. Symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, difficulty in breathing, fatigue, sore throat, and red rashes. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces, much like the flu. 

The Punjab government continues to work closely with the central authorities and remain vigilant to safeguard public health.
