Holiday alert. The month of May brings a mix of reflection and celebration to Punjab. Two significant holidays observed during this time are 'May Day' on 1 May and 'Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day' on 30 May.

International Workers’ Day - 1 May

May Day, or International Workers’ Day, marks the celebration of workers' contributions and struggles globally. Even in 2025, there is a big need for full awareness of workers' rights and privileges. Several unions and social groups organize small marches and events in Punjab on this special day. Schools and government offices remain closed, giving families a break and a chance to relax. For many, it's a peaceful day of rest and rewind.

Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day - 30 May

Towards the end of the month, Punjab sees a deeply spiritual and solemn holiday, Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day on 30 May. Notably, Guru Arjun Dev Ji was the fifth Sikh Guru and the first Sikh martyr. He was known for his warm compassion, spiritual wisdom, and his role in composing the Guru Granth Sahib.

His martyrdom in 1606 was a pivotal point in Sikh history. Guru Arjun Dev Ji was tortured and executed under the Mughal emperor Jahangir for refusing to convert and for supporting truth and justice. Every year, on this day, Sikhs gather at gurdwaras across Punjab and around the world to remember his sacrifice. Free community kitchens, or langars, are organized, and cool sweet drinks like chabeel are served to people on the streets as an act of service and remembrance.

Overall, these two holidays reflect two important aspects of life in Punjab: standing up for rights and standing firm in faith. May in Punjab is a time to pause, pay respect, and draw inspiration from the past.
