27 Punjab-origin candidates to fight British Columbia provincial elections 2024; Know who they are

Multiple Punjab-origin candidates are fighting in the upcoming election of this foreign country. The elections will be held on 19th October.

The National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Conservative Party has come up with several Punjabi candidates who are going to fight in the upcoming provincial election that will be held on 19th October.

The list of candidates includes Ravi Kahlon, Rachna Singh, Raj Chauhan, Jagroop Brar, Kamal Grewal, Harpreet Badowal, Harwinder Sandhu, Baltej Dhillon, Aman Singh, Anne Kang, Reah Arora, Niki Sharma, Sunita Dhir, Ravi Parmar, Jinny Sin, include Harman Bhangu, Avtar Gill, Honveer S. Randhawa, Tegjot Bal, Mandeep Dhaliwal, Deepak Suri, and Jagdeep Sanghera.

Election in which foreign country?

A total of 27 candidates of Punjabi origin are competing in the upcoming provincial election in British Columbia, Canada, which will be held on October 19. Ravi Kahlon nominated by the NDP, is the sitting Minister of Housing and Government House leader. He is also a former hockey player who represented Canada in the 2000 and 2008 Olympics.

From NDP, Rachna Singh, the current Minister of Education and Child Care, is seeking re-election for the third term from Surrey North. She originally belongs to Delhi and she got raised in Chandigarh. Rachna has a master’s degree in psychology from the Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Senior NDP leader and the current Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Raj Chauhan, is contesting for a record sixth term. He is a veteran politician and has served as an MLA since 2005. He has held various key roles, including the role of Deputy Speaker.

 Jagroop Brar is the Minister of State for Trade and now he is also seeking re-election from Surrey Fleetwood for the seventh time. Jagroop is originally from Bathinda. He was a member of India’s national basketball team before shifting to Canada.

Other NDP candidates of Punjabi origin include Kamal Grewal, Harpreet Badowal, Harwinder Sandhu, Baltej Dhillon, Aman Singh, Anne Kang, Reah Arora, Niki Sharma, Sunita Dhir, Ravi Parmar, and Jinny Sin.

The Conservative Party candidates include Harman Bhangu, Avtar Gill, Honveer S. Randhawa, Tegjot Bal, Mandeep Dhaliwal, Deepak Suri, and Jagdeep Sanghera.

Manjeet Sahota is has contested under the Green Party ticket from Surrey Guildford. Meanwhile, many other Punjabi-origin candidates, including Pavneet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Amrit Birring, and Dupinder Saran, are contesting as Independent candidates. Harry Bains, a senior NDP leader, is not contesting this time as he has retired from politics after serving as an MLA from Surrey Newton since 2005.

In the 2020 British Columbia provincial poll, a total of eight Punjabi candidates won, out of which seven candidates are again going to contest in this upcoming provincial election.
