With India already in April, the summer season has started to peak in many states. North India including Punjab and Haryana is all set to witness an intense heatwave in the coming days. It means the temperature in Punjab is likely to soar and the people may have to bear extremely hot weather. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has already warned Punjab and other states that they will witness above-normal heatwave days from April to June.
Now, reports suggest that the temperature in Punjab is likely to rise up to 45°C in some areas between April 7 and April 9. After brief cloudy conditions expected in some parts of the state, the weather is set to turn extremely hot.
Dr. Kulwinder Kaur, a meteorologist at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, said that while current temperatures remain moderate, a noticeable spike is expected in the coming days. She emphasized that the sudden rise in day temperatures and cooler nights may affect people’s health. "Such fluctuations can lead to heat-related illnesses. It’s important for people to stay hydrated, avoid going out during peak sun hours, and take extra care of children and elderly members of the family,” Dr. Kaur advised.
What is IMD's prediction of summer in Punjab?
The Indian weather department forecasts six to ten heatwave days from April to June, potentially increasing to 10-11 by June. In normal situations, India experiences four to seven heatwave days during this period. However, this year (2025), the frequency is predicted to be higher. Punjab is also among the list of states that will witness above-normal heatwave days.
