It is still not March, and Punjab is under an all-time temperature surge, breaking centuries-old records. According to the reports, the day and night temperatures in Ludhiana are a record-breaking 4 to 5 degrees above normal, indicating an unseasonal temperature hike during this time.
Meteorologists have predicted even higher temperatures in the coming days, advising people to take precautions.
Pavneet Kaur Kingra, a meteorologist at PAU Ludhiana, said continuous changes in the weather have resulted in consistently above-average temperatures. On Sunday, Ludhiana recorded a 4°C above-normal day temperature and a 5°C above-normal night temperature. According to her, today's lowest temperature in Ludhiana was the second lowest in the state during the past 50 years.
Although this temperature rise is likely to benefit wheat yields, experts are cautioning against increasing heatwaves in the upcoming few weeks, which are perceptibly harmful to public health. Meteorologists advised drinking water in adequate amounts to stay hydrated, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and taking proper care to avoid heat strokes.
Expert statement
“Temperatures are constantly crossing seasonal levels. Though this favors wheat yield, excess heat is dangerous. Individuals must look after their health by drinking more water and remaining indoors in the afternoon."
