'Youths in Politics'; well this was one of the many key issues that Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted during his Independence Day Speech 2024. While the Government of India will encourage youths to enter politics and change the nation's landscape, Punjab University Students' election date has been announced. As per reports, the Chandigarh administration has given the green signal for the Punjab University Student Union Election. Out of the dates sent by PU for conducting the student union elections, the administration approved the elections on September 5, 2024.
A meeting of the administration officials was reportedly held regarding the PU student union elections, in which security arrangements and other preparations for the elections were discussed.
After consensus on all the issues, the administration has approved the PU student union elections on September 5. Along with PU, elections will be held in affiliated colleges in the city on the same day. The result will also be declared by late evening i.e. on September 5 evening. Last year, the student union elections were held on September 7.
By next week, the PU administration will issue an official notification regarding the elections. Security arrangements will be tightened in the campus even before the announcement of the elections. The election date has been announced in view of the holidays. In view of the possibility of conflict between student leaders, there will be a holiday on the campus for three days immediately after the elections.
The impact of victory or defeat in Punjab University student union elections is directly seen on the politics of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal. In view of the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana on October 1, 2024, there will be heavy pressure on the student unit of Congress's NSUI, BJP's ABVP, INSO and JJP to win. Big leaders of Haryana will also be seen in the battlefield for victory in the upcoming elections.
More than 16 thousand students from more than 80 departments in PU will vote in the student union elections. There will also be separate voting for student union elections in the evening department of PU. Every year a separate council is formed in the evening department. PU research scholars also vote in the elections. Voters of departments like University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dental College, three year and five year law departments, UICET, UBS etc. located in PU will play an important role in victory or defeat. On the other hand, more than 35 thousand students in the city colleges will also vote in the student union elections.
In 2023, the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of Congress, won the presidential post in the Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) elections in Chandigarh. NSUI wrested the position from the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), the student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
