The Indian Meteorological Department has issued tentative dates on which monsoon winds are likely to reach certain states of India. According to the Department, monsoon is likely to arrive in Punjab between June 26 and July 1. It is likely to reach Himachal from 22nd June, Madhya Pradesh from June 16 to 21 and Rajasthan from June 25 to July 6.
The Met department announced the arrival of monsoon at the Andaman and Nicobar Island groups on May 19. It is expected to reach Kerala by 31st May. In the previous year, monsoon had arrived in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 19 but reached Kerala with a delay of 9 days on June 8.
Red alert issued in Punjab and other northern states for heatwave
While the wait for monsoon may alleviate a bit of the burden of the heat, it is still scorching conditions in the northern states of India. The temperature is rising in Punjab and people are facing the menace of heat wave. The temperature in Punjab has reportedly crossed 46 degrees centigrade. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Punjab.
Punjab Government announces holidays in schools amidst heatwave
In view of the increasing heat, the Punjab government has announced holidays in the schools of the state from May 21 to June 30. Due to heat, holidays have been announced 8 days before the schedule.
