Punjab's 'commercial capital' Ludhiana most unsafe for children, reveals NCRB data

Report released by National Crime Records Bureau in 2021 ranks Ludhiana as the most unsafe city for children in Punjab. As per the reports 283 cases of murder, kidnapping, rape and molestation were registered in the city and the cases are increasing ever since. The data reveals that in 2021, 2556 cases of crime against children were reported in Punjab out of which Ludhiana 11% were reported from Ludhiana.

After Ludhiana, Mohali comes at second position with 252 cases of crime against children followed by Patiala with 185 cases and Amritsar is at fourth position with 129 cases, Bathina with 119 cases and Jalandhar with 116 cases.

As per the information received, children’s age who become victim of crime ranges from 5-16 years and 80% of them belong to slum areas. Shocking fact is that the crimes committed are by father, neighbor, grandfather or relatives. Not only this, in some of the reported cases, boys are also the victims.

The crime rate in Punjab is increasing rapidly. In the year 2021, 49% of the total crime was related to murder, rape, kidnapping, acid attack and molestation of women and children. In 2020, the registered cases count was approximately 5706. Of this, crime related to women was 47 percent. Surprisingly, during lockdown, Ludhiana here the number of crimes related to women was 328.

The reports reveal that in Punjab, Malerkotla is the only city that is safest for children as only 24 cases of crime against them were registered in the whole year.

Dr. Kaustubh Sharma, CP on the data stated, “In the case of girls, action is taken by the police on the basis of initiative. Apart from this, women and girls are made aware under the Mahila Mitra Scheme of Punjab Police.”
