If you’re seeking unexplored gems in India, look no further than Nawanpind Sardaran, a quaint village in Gurdaspur, Punjab, which recently clinched the prestigious title of Best Tourism Village of the Year awarded by the Union Ministry of Tourism. This accolade is a testament to the village’s dedication to cultural preservation and sustainable development.

Out of 750 villages from 31 states and union territories that vied for the honor, only 35 made the cut. Selection criteria included sustainable development goals, cultural and heritage conservation, natural resource management, economic and social sustainability, environmental responsibility, and tourism development.

Nawanpind Sardaran, located just five kilometers south of National Highway 54, serves as a heritage stopover on the way to popular destinations like Vaishnodevi temple, Kangra, Dharamshala, and Dalhousie, making it an ideal rest point for travelers heading to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir from Amritsar.

Founded by Narain Singh in the 19th century, the village boasts a stately mansion called Kothi, constructed in 1886, which served both as a residence and an agricultural hub. Additionally, the Pipal Haveli, built almost 140 years ago, has been meticulously restored and transformed into a homestay for tourists, thanks to the efforts of the Sangha sisters.

These five sisters—Gursimran Kaur Sangha, Gurmeet Rai Sangha, Manpreet Kaur Sangha, Gita Sangha, and Noor Sangha—are the custodians of Nawanpind Sardaran’s heritage.

Their journey began 15 years ago when Gurmeet Rai Sangha, a conservation architect, proposed the restoration of their ancestral home. Today, these sisters not only safeguard their heritage but also actively engage with the local community, championing rural tourism and creating employment opportunities.

Gursimran Kaur Sangha operates a goat farming business, employing local youths and contributing to the village’s economy. Gita Sangha manages Bari Collective, a brand empowering village women to craft and promote local art.

The sisters have also provided employment to local women for the upkeep of Kothi and Pipal Haveli, transformed into cozy homestays. Manpreet Kaur Sangha handles online bookings, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors. Noor Sangha, the youngest sister and a lawyer by profession, lends her expertise to the family’s initiatives.

In 2019, Nawanpind Sardaran garnered attention when actor Sunny Deol and Bollywood icon Dharmendra were captivated by the village’s charm during their visit.

This recognition further cements Nawanpind Sardaran’s status as a must-visit destination, where history, culture, and warm hospitality await travelers.
