Situated in Rajpura, Punjab, Chitkara University late Sunday night submerged into the water in a flood-like situation which left many students stranded. Chitkara University flooding happened in the backdrop of the constant rain in Patiala and surrounding areas resulting in a breach in the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal adjoining Rajpura. The situation was so alarming that the district administration had to call the Army in order to carry out a rescue mission especially to evacuate Chitkara University students and residents from Garhi village. Amid the unprecedented event, Chitkara University's administration has announced that the college will remain closed till July 16, 2023.
Going by an official notification issued for the students of Chitkara University, the college informed the students that 'due to flood' the university will be closed till July 16 and they will be updated accordingly in this regard. The University administration in its message further stated that Army is helping the Rajpura administration to tackle the situation near Chitkara University as the SYL breach in Rajpura left a pvt hospital inundated ( Neelam - - opposite to our University)where 14 patients were already admitted. These patients were shifted to government hospitals whereas 2 patients who were in serious condition and already admitted in pvt hospital have been shifted to Government Rajindra Hospital Patiala. The college administration also informed that it can't access the amount of damage the flood has caused it but it mentioned that it has suffered massive the University has 'suffered' a lot.
Going by reports, A spokesperson of the army informed, "A total of 910 students were evacuated safely and the rest will be evacuated soon." To be precise, 2000 students were stranded at Chitkara University. Patiala Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, who has been monitoring the evacuation operation since Sunday, has requested people to reach out to her or on the helpline number 0175-2311321. "There is no need to panic. We are continuously monitoring the situation and teams are working at Badi Nadi and there is no breach in it as such," said Patiala Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney.
Apart from Chitkara University, the threat of a flood-like situation is looming in Patiala as well. Reports suggest that water level in Patiala’s seasonal rivulet Badi Nadi has touched the danger mark due to continuous rainfall in the past two days and the district administration had made arrangements for the evacuation of residents of Bada Arain Majra, which lies adjoining the rivulet.
