With the arrival of New Year, OTT platforms are all braced to drop much-awaited series and movies on their platform. Talking about the much-awaited series, Killer Soup will be available for streaming on Netflix from January 11, 2023. Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sensharma, Sayaji Shinde, Nassar, and more in the leading roles, Killer Soup is a dark crime thriller. Directed and co-written by Abhishek Chaubey, Killer Soup revolves around a woman who thinks of herself as a chef but makes a soup that ultimately takes people's lives. Since the storyline is so much close to reality, the question arises whether Killer Soup is a true story or Killer Soup is a real story or not? Below is everything you need to know about Killer Soup True Story (if it is)-
Is Killer Soup a true story?
The answer is no. Despite being so close to reality, Killer Soup is not a true story based on a woman chef who kills people by serving them poisonous soups. In the trailer, The Killer Soup says that it is 'very very loosely based on real headlines'. As per reports, Killer Soup is set in South India and follows a character named Swathi Shetty, an aspiring yet talentless home chef, who conspires to replace her husband, Prabhakar, with her lover, Umesh. The official synopsis of the movie says, "What’s the secret ingredient of this soup? Is it love? Is it revenge? Whatever it is, we can’t wait to see what’s cooking."
Killer Soup maker Abhishek Chaubey was quoted saying, "With Killer Soup, we wanted to give the audience permission to laugh and also be totally shocked with a crime thriller that blends in humour and quirkiness." He further said, "It is a pot-boiler sent completely over the top with an exceptional cast including Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sensharma, Nasser, Sayaji Shinde and Lal. Through this series, I wanted to serve up something exceptional with Netflix and it has been a creatively fulfilling experience with them."
Although Killer Soup is a fictional story, there is an actual case that took place in South India when a woman confessed six people by serving them poisonous soup i.e. the infamous case of Jolly Joseph.
Originally hailing from Kattappana, Idukki district, Jolly Joseph is the prime accused in the sensational Kerala cyanide murders. Jolly Joseph aka Jolly Amma Joseph was arrested in October 2019 for killing six members of her family including a 2-year-old infant in a span of 14 years by using cyanide. Jolly confessed to poisoning six members of her family over a 14-year period by adding cyanide to their food. While at first their deaths were reported natural or from heart attack, later she came under the scanner and the Police found cynide traces in the deceased blood. Recently, a docuseries was also made named Curry & Cynide and it is available on Netflix, but it is hard to say whether Killer Soup is inspired from the Jolly Joseph Case.
Another case took place in Australia. A woman named Judith Ann Venn served her husband vegetable soup laced with a fatal dose of medication in their Brisbane home, she ate the soup herself, before going to read a book. Venn, 69, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Brisbane Supreme Court over the 2020 killing of her husband Lance Hilton Venn at their Alexandra Hills home.
