With the Valentine's Day fever taking over the world, a romantic limited series titled One Day was released on Netflix on February 8, 2024. At first, One Day did not make many headlines, but slowly and steadily, the romantic love story is becoming the talking point. In fact, on Tuesday, Netflix's One Day became the top trending topic of Google Trends in both the US and India. Directed by Molly Manners, Kate Hewitt, John Hardwick, and Luke Snelling, One Day is a brand new limited series about Emma and Dex and a love story that spans over twenty years. Is One Day a true story?
The answer is no. Netflix's One Day is a fictional story based on a global best-selling book of the same name authored by David Nicholls. David Nicholls also serves as executive producer of the series (from production company Drama Republic) alongside Roanna Benn, Jude Liknaitzky, and Nicole Taylor. However, some excerpts and segments is inspired by One Day's author's personal life.
As per US media reports, One Day author David Nicholls published his unique romance novel in 2009, and like many writers took inspiration from his own life when creating the story. Therefore, there are a lot of similarities between Dexter and Emma, and David’s own life. David first had the idea for One Day when he himself was in school, studying Tess of the D'Urbervilles, which made him consider the importance of a single date, with 'hidden anniversaries' people pass through each year with no idea of what’s to come in their future.
Like Emma, David also studied English and Drama at university, and he gave her experiences saying, "False starts and blind alleys." The series is also set in Edinburgh because he fell in love with the city while living there for a summer as a young man, having spent most of his life near Bristol.
