Is Woman of the Hour based on a true story?
The answer to this question is yes. The Women of the Hour is based on a real-life event. It is based on the incident that took place in 1978, when Cheryl Bradshaw went on ‘The Dating Game’ and was unknowingly matched with a serial killer named Richard Alcala.
In 1978, serial killer Rodney Alcala appeared on The Dating Game and won a date with bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. Before this, Alcala had murdered five women. He is often referred to as the ‘Dating Game Killer’ because of his 1978 appearance on the television show.
Rodney James Alcala was an American serial killer and sex offender who was sentenced to death in California for five murders. He committed these murders between 1977 and 1979. While he has been linked to a total of eight murders, his true number of victims are still unknown and could be as high as 130.
Alcala won the competition and a date with the Cheryl Bradshaw but she refused to go out with him because she found him creepy.
Criminal profiler Pat Brown revealed the impact of this rejection Alcala faced. He said, “That is something he would not take too well. Psychopaths don't understand the rejection. They think that something is wrong with that girl: She played me. She played hard to get. She wanted to live.”
