Is Bambai Meri Jaan a true story?

The answer is yes and no at the same time. While Bambai Meri Jaan portrays the real incident in Mumbai during the 1960s when the underworld's terror was at its peak, the story around gangster Dara Kadri might not be true. In an interview with the starcast of Bambai Meri Jaan by an Entertainment portal, the journalist clearly mentioned that the crime-drama series revolving around gangster Dara Kadri is fictional. For the unversed, gangster Dara Kadri has been portrayed by actor Avinash Tiwary and Kay Kay Menon portrays the character of his father Ismail Kadri who is a cop in the Mumbai Police. Going by the trailer, Bambai Meri Jaan chronicles how Dara Kadri stepped inside the underworld despite of the fact that he was the son of a Mumbai Police officer.

A report suggests that Dara Kadri's role is inspired by underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim, however, the makers during an interview with the portal did not deny the journalist who stated that Bambai Meri Jaan is fictional. It is pertinent to mention here that a movie named Once Upon A Time in Mumbai was made in a similar type of plot in which Emran Hashmi allegedly portrayed the character of Dawood who was the son of a Police officer.

Multiple reports suggest that Bambai Meri Jaan is based on the book, 'Dongri to Dubai' by investigative journalist Hussain Zaidi. Hence, there are multiple facets in the series which is true but the makers may have used some element of fiction in order to dramatize the event.

For the unversed, Dongri to Dubai traces the journey of underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim from the streets of Dongri to Dubai, where is eventually formed his crime syndicate and empire.

Talking about Bambai Meri Jaan True Story, the series has some reality to it as well. For instance, Haji Mastan and Pathaan gang. For the unversed, Haji Mastan or Sultan Mirza, was an Indian mafia gang leader, originally from Tamil Nadu and based in Bombay. He was one of an infamous trio of mafia gang leaders in Bombay for over two decades from the 1960s to the early 1980s, along with Karim Lala leader of the Pathan gang, and Varadarajan Mudaliar, another famous gang leader from Tamil Nadu in South India.

Interestingly, the story of Haji Mastan, Karim Lala, and even Dawood Ibrahim has been depicted multiple times. However, Bambai Meri Jaan sends a gentle reminder of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai in which Ajay Devgn played the role of Sultan Mirza and Emran Hashmi played the character of a policeman's son.

Now, for those who love to watch crime drama inspired by true stories or real events, Bambai Meri Jaan can be a treat to watch on Prime Video.
