In the wake of Surfing’s debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the attention of the world has centered around Surfing as a sport that was once limited to certain blocs itself.

Japan hosting the Olympics and then creating a state-of-the-art facility to organize Surfing is itself a matter of great value. But, how did all this come into the picture of a culture which was taken from the West now stands as a rich Japanese culture which has been preserved for decades?

And Disney has taken such an initiative to present this ahead of the entire world by announcing a brand-new series, “Chasing Waves” that casts a spotlight on the people and places that are defining Japan’s rich surf culture.

Chasing Waves is a true story that is dedicated to the surfing culture in Japan and examines the diverse regions, unique characters, and endless surf along the over 18,000 miles of coastline that makes Japan one of a kind.

The character-driven documentary series follows athletes from various cultural backgrounds as they pursue their dreams and paints a captivating picture of Japanese life and showcases what it takes to succeed in the international surf industry.

The docu-series features extraordinary pro surfers Mahina Maeda, Yuma Takanuki, Sara Kohrogi, 2021 Olympic Silver Medallist Kanoa Igarashi, and Australian-Japanese surfer Connor O’Leary.

Beginning from the indoor wave pool which is recognized by “Ocean Dome” in Miyazaki to the hallowed grounds of the iconic surfers in Hokkaido, the new series presents a comprehensive picture of the rich Japanese Surfing culture. Jason Baffa’s directorial docu-series consists of 8 episodes which are co-produced by Christopher G. Cowen and Andrew Fried.

The series’s 8 episodes from ‘Chasing The Dream’ episode 1 to the ‘Sea of Change’ episode 8 present a detailed picture of its emergence, importance at present till the game’s future as it becomes a permanent Olympics sport from the lens of the athletes. The series is set to stream from January 11th under the banner of Boardwalk Pictures and Station 10 Media.
