While Delhi Crime season 2 continues to rule the OTT platform since it was released on Netflix on August 26, fans have many questions regarding the crime thriller web series. The Emmy Award-winning web series Delhi Crime 2 was one of the most awaited web series and it did not disappoint the fans at all. While Delhi Crime Season 1 depicted the sensational 2012 Nirbhaya Rape Case, fans were wondering which real-life case the widely acclaimed web series will focus on this time. For the unversed, Delhi Crime 2 is fictionalised account of the brutal 'Kachcha Baniyan' gang that once struck terror in the national capital. Now, fans are wondering Is Delhi Crime 2 star Shefali Shah's character Vartika Chaturvedi is based on a true character or Shefali Shah's real-life character or Vartika Chaturvedi real-life character, or Shefali Shah Chhaya Sharma real-life story?
The answer to this question is yes and no at the same time. The character of Vartika Chaturvedi which is played by Shefali Shah in Delhi Crime, was based on Chhaya Sharma, the former deputy commissioner of police in Delhi, however, it cannot be said in Delhi Crime 2. Reportedly, when the Delhi Crime web series was in the pipeline, its creator Richie Mehta met former deputy commissioner of Police in Delhi- Chhaya Sharma to know insight into the 2012 Nirbhaya Rape Case. Later, Mehta weaved a story on the accounts of Chhaya Sharma and came up with a web series named Delhi Crime. The character of Chhaya Sharma was named Vartika Chaturvedi and then Shefali Shah was roped in to play the character in Delhi Crime. It is pertinent to mention here Chhaya Sharma was the DCP when the sensational 2012 Nirbhaya Case took place.
Notably, Delhi Police nabbed the guilty within 5 days under the leadership of Chhaya Sharma. Chhaya Sharma is a 1999-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre and an Economics (Honours) graduate from the University of Delhi. Notably, Chhaya Sharma was the first woman DCP of South Delhi and went on to become the first Indian police officer to receive the McCain Award for Courage and Leadership 'in solving humanitarian and societal issues' from Arizona State University.
Now, another question arises whether Delhi Crimes 2 also portrays the character of Chhaya Sharma played by Shefali Shah? The answer is no. The terror triggered by Kachcha Baniyan Gang in the national capital is the basis of Delhi Crime 2. However, when the Kachcha Baniyan Gang's terror was on its peak in New Delhi, Neeraj Kumar was the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) in south Delhi.
Neeraj Kumar in an interview with a newswire recalled the horrors and complications the Delhi Police and he faced nabbing the Kachcha Baniyan gang. Notably, Neeraj Kumar has also discussed the Kachchan Baniyan incident in his book 'Khaki Files'. So, whether Delhi Crime 2 also has Chhaya Sharma's touch cannot be said for sure, as the makers have did not divulge much information regarding this.
