The much-awaited Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 is all set to release on Netflix on January 12, 2023. After the success of its first season, the world of Vikings return to take their revenge on England and will continue their journey to explore new places around the world. For the unversed, Vikings: Valhalla is creator Jeb Stuart’s continuation of Michael Hirst’s Vikings, and is set a century after the original series. Talking about the star cast, Sam Corlett will be leading the charge as Leif Eriksson, while Leo Suter (Sanditon) plays his trusted ally Harald Sigurdsson. Frida Gustavsson also stars as Freydís Eiríksdóttir, while Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson portrays Jarl Olaf Haraldsson, who was responsible for a devastating death in the season 1 finale. Not only this, Bradley Freegard (King Canute), Laura Berlin (Queen Emma of Normandy), Soren Pilmark (King Forkbeard), and David Oakes (Earl Godwin), are also returning in the second installment. With multiple series and movies already present on the same concept, the question arises whether Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 is a true story or Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 is a real story or not.
The answer to this question is yes and no at the same time. Vikings: Valhalla is a historical fiction adventure series bringing the stories of some of the most famous Vikings to the screen including Leif Eriksson and more from Danish history. To be precise, Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 is a fictionalised story based on real events of Pegan's history, however, this particular series focuses on the aftermath of the St Brice's Day Massacre, which saw King Athelred of England order the mass killings of Danes in 1002. Another question arises how Vikings: Valhalla is different from the other web series based on the same concept? The answer is Valhalla is set 100 years after the events of History TV’s Vikings. The new show packs in a new storyline and new characters. Even though the new show calls out characters from the previous show, like Ragnar Lothbrok, former leader of Kattegat, and his first wife, Lagertha, they are all shown in a new and fresh way perspective.
Who was Leif Eriksson?
As per the information available, Leif Erikson was also known as Leif the Lucky and he was a Norse explorer who is thought to have been the first European to have set foot on continental North America, approximately half a millennium before Christopher Columbus. According to the sagas of Icelanders, he established a Norse settlement at Vinland, which is usually interpreted as being coastal North America. There is ongoing speculation that the settlement made by Leif and his crew corresponds to the remains of a Norse settlement found in Newfoundland, Canada, called L'Anse aux Meadows, which was occupied 1,000 years ago.
