Rohit Shetty, in an interview with casting director Mukesh Chhabra, narrated, "I was making an action thriller with Ajay (Ajay Devgn). Neeraj Vora (writer of Golmaal) called me and asked me what movie I was working on. I said I am making a thriller. I was struggling then. Neeraj Vohra, who was a star writer, told me that he had a story idea and asked me if he could narrate it. Then he narrated me the idea of Golmaal. I asked him if he will write the movie. He said yes. On that very day, I went to Ajay Sir. I told him that I didn't want to make that movie (thriller), I want to make this (Golmaal). Neeraj Vohra wrote the script. So, the next day, Ajay Sir also called him (Neeraj), and we both went to his office."
"Neeraj Vohra narrated the basic idea of Golmaal. He also liked it. It was a comedy movie. I never thought it would turn out to be a cult. The film started in 2005 and it was released in 2006. I made it for survival in the industry, but today, you can see where I am. In September 2004, I filmed the first shot of Golmaal in which all the four actors Ajay, Arshad, Sherman and Tusshar Kapoor entered Rimi Sen's house.
How did Tusshar Kapoor land the iconic role in Golmaal?
Rohit Shetty further revealed, "Tusshar Kapoor was the third or fourth choice. 3 to 4 actors rejected the role, saying there was no dialogue, there were already 3 actors, and they would not stand out in the movie. It was Neeraj Vohra's idea to cast Tusshar Kapoor in the character of Lucky. We narrated the character to Tusshar Kapoor. Tusshar Kapoor asked if we will handle everything as there was no dialogue.
