New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) of India punished Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Thakur from campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections for the next 72 hours on Wednesday.

Bhopal BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya was barred for her remarks on 26/11 martyr Hemant Karkare and Babri Masjid demolition.

She lit the fire of controversy when she said that she cursed Karkare while she was in jail. And again she gave a controversial remark to a TV channel while campaigning about the Babri Majid. On being asked by the media if the temple will be built at Ramjanmabhoomi, she replied, “Definitely, a grand one. We will build the temple. After all we went to demolish the structure. I climbed atop the the structure to break it. I am tremendously proud that God gave me the opportunity and the strength to do it. And I did it.  We wiped off a blot on the country. Now we will build the Ram temple there."

The EC has strongly condemned the statements made by Pragya as it violates the rule against appealing to caste and communal feelings.

However, Pragya has already apologised for her statement on Hemant karkare. The EC said, “Even though Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has apologised on her statement made about the late Shri Hemant Karkare, the commission has found it unwarranted.”

On Babri remark the EC said, “It was convinced that Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur in her impugned speech appealed to secure votes on religious lines that tantamount to violation of provisions of Para 3 of part 1 ‘General conduct’ of Model Code of Conduct, for the guidance of political parties and candidates."
