The Supreme Court of India on Monday slammed Central government and directed that women officers must be given a permanent commission (PC) in the Army. Giving the direction, the apex court also said that the change of mindset is required on part of the government.
The Central government had appealed against the Delhi High Court's decision for granting permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army. The Supreme Court reprimanded the government and advised to change its mindset and give command positions to women officers.
Rejecting Centre opposition to permanent commission and command appointments to women officers citing physiological features, the Supreme Court said this perpetuates "gender stereotypes".
The Supreme Court went on to say that, "the contentions of the centre, regarding the issue of physiological limitations & social norms to deny an opportunity to women officers, is disturbing and can't be accepted."
