The Supreme Court of India rejected a curative petition filed by one of the four death-row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court considered the petition behind closed doors and rejected it Thursday afternoon. The petition was filed by Akshay Kumar Singh.
In its judgment, the five-judge bench of Justices NV Ramana, Arun Mishra, RF Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan said no case was made out in the curative petition filed by Akshay.
A curative petition is usually the final judicial remedy available to a person convicted by courts of law. Akshay Kumar Singh now has the option of seeking mercy from the President.
Akshay Kumar Singh is one of four convicts in the 2012 Nirbahya gang-rape and murder case. All four are on death row and are currently jailed at Delhi's Tihar jail.
