Diljit Dosanjh starrer Panjab 95 is all set to get released on 7th February in international cinemas. This movie is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. It stars Diljit Dosanjh, Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky. In India, Panjab 95 had faced delays due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Amid the movie's release date controversy, now, a new government elementary school is being built in Fresno, California, USA. It is being named after the late human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. On Tuesday, this decision was taken in a meeting of Fresno's Central Unified School District (CUCD). This is likely to be the first school in the USA to be named after a Sikh.
This board had a total of 7 members, out of which six members agreed to name the school after Jaswant Singh Khalra and voted in favour. Central Unified School Board President Naindeep Singh Chann said it is likely to be the first government school in the US to be named after a Sikh person.
The construction of this school named after the late human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra has already begun and will be inaugurated in September 2025.
Jaswant Singh Khalra’s wife Paramjit Kaur Khalra said that this is a moment of pride and happiness for her. Her late husband's sacrifice and struggle for human rights is being honored by naming a government school in America.
Apart from this, there is already a park named after Khalra in Fresno and the locals are well aware of his struggle and efforts for human rights. He is respected not only by the Sikh community but also by people from other communities.
Jaswant Singh Khalra was the director of a bank in the city of Amritsar in Punjab during the militancy period in Punjab. He was investigating four major cases and collecting evidences.
In September 1995, he was last seen in front of his house washing his car in Amritsar. As per official reports, he was tortured and shot dead at Jhabal police station. Following this, four policemen were given life imprisonment in the Jaswant Singh Khalra’s murder case.
