Sector 36 is said to be inspired by a true story based on the infamous Nithari Killings of Noida in 2006. While Deepak Dobriyal plays the character of a cop named Ram Charan Pandey, Vikrant Massey plays a serial killer named Prem Singh. While the makers are keeping themselves mum, the answer of who is real-life Prem Singh can be dug in the Nithari Killings. In 2006 children started to go missing from slums of Nithari in Noida. As per reports, the Nithari serial killings involved kidnapping, sexual abuse, and murder of children and young women in Noida. The main suspects were Surinder Koli, a domestic help, and Moninder Singh Pandher, the owner of the house where the crimes took place.
Surinder Koli allegedly lured the victims (mostly children) by offering sweets and chocolates. The trailer of Sector 36 showcased a similar scene where Vikrant Massey as Prem Singh lures a child by offering chocolate. Once inside, he would strangle them, engage in necrophilia, dismember their bodies, and in some cases, cannibalise the remains. The bones and body parts were disposed of in a drain or the backyard behind the house, leading to the discovery of multiple remains that shocked the nation.
It is pertinent to mention here that Moninder Singh was convicted in two out of the five cases against him, and his servant Surinder Koli, who supposedly aided him, was convicted in 10 out of the 16 cases against him. Both were originally sentenced to death, however in 2023, Allahabad High Court acquitted them citing lack of evidence.
