The recent statement by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has landed her in soup. The politician has been called out for calling Indian team captain Rohit Sharma “fat” and the “unimpressive captain India has ever had.”
The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has also come forward to support Hitman and criticize Mohamed for such a comment.
It is to be noted that her remarks came after the Indian captain was dismissed after making just 15 runs off 17 balls during the India vs New Zealand match on Monday, during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy.
Following the comment about Rohit's fitness, Shama Mohamed faced high criticism and backlash, as she has now deleted the social media post.
According to various sources, the now-deleted post read, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!”
As soon as cricket lovers across the nation shared disliking the comment, the Congress party quickly distanced itself, according to firstpost.com.
What does the BCCI have to say?
Recently, the Secretary of BCCI, Devajit Saikia, stood in favor of captain Rohit Sharma and condemned Shama Mohamed for the remarks.
According to PTI, Saikia was quoted saying, “Very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment when the team is in the midst of such a marquee ICC tournament. It may have a demoralizing effect on an individual or the team.”
Additionally, he mentioned, “All the players are performing to their highest potential, and results are visible. I hope individuals shall desist from making such derogatory statements for personal publicity sake at the cost of National Interest.”
Political leaders’ statements against Shama Mohamed
A quick political controversy erupted against Shama Mohamed. Leaders of almost every political party criticized her for such statements.
While supporting Rohit Sharma, Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi stated that Sharma’s weight is nothing in front of his achievements as a captain or a cricketer, as per firstpost.com.
Along with this, BJP leaders also lashed out at Mohmed’s remarks.
Notably, Rohit Sharma is leading India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, guiding his team to the semi-finals with an unbeaten record. India will face Australia in the first semi-final on Tuesday, March 4.
