Jalandhar, April 9:
A shocking incident of sacrilege and violence took place on Wednesday morning in Jalandhar, Punjab, where an idol of Lord Shani Dev was vandalized at a local temple situated in Thapra Bageechee on Sodal Road. The attacker also physically assaulted the temple priest and his family members.
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the accused, identified as 34-year-old Bahadur, a resident of Jalandhar, entered the temple premises and began acting aggressively. He reportedly attacked the idol with a blunt object, causing significant damage. The neck portion of the idol was broken and fell to the ground.
When the priest tried to intervene, the accused allegedly assaulted him along with other members of his family. Hearing the commotion, locals rushed to the spot and immediately informed the Division No. 8 police. The police team reached the location promptly and began an investigation.
Initially, the priest claimed that some unknown assailants had entered the temple and carried out the attack. However, police later identified and arrested Bahadur in connection with the incident. An FIR has been registered against him, and legal action is underway.
The act of desecration has sparked outrage among local residents, many of whom gathered at the site demanding strict action against the accused. Police officials have assured the public of a thorough investigation and appealed for calm.
Authorities are also looking into the mental health and possible motives of the accused. Meanwhile, the temple management has started arrangements for reinstalling the idol after performing the necessary rituals.
