In yet another shocking incident of negligence, a newborn’s feet and toes were nibbled by a rat in the hospital. The incident occurred in a government-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. So far, the authorities have suspended a nurse for negligence and terminated two sanitation workers.
The 19-day-old baby boy was kept in a nursery located on the first floor of Maharaja Yeshwantrao hospital as the child was not fully developed, weighing around 1kg and 400 grams. Newborn’s mother Priyanka went to feed the child around 3 am on Monday and witnessed blood oozing from one of the toes of the baby.
Shocked to see this, she raised an alarm. After this, immediate treatment was started. The baby was examined by a plastic surgeon and it was confirmed that a toe and a finger of the child have been bitten by a rat.

“At 3 am my wife went to feed the child and got to know that rats nibbled the child’s feed. My baby doesn't have his foot toe,” said Kishan Dahima, father of the baby.
After the family protested, Hospital Superintendent PS Thakur said, “A nurse has been suspended for negligence of duty and two sanitation workers have been terminated for failing to maintain cleanliness at the hospital.”
He further stated that the infant was treated for the injuries and his condition is stable. “A three-member committee has been formed to probe into the matter” he added.
