Bollywood movie Luck’s director Soham Shah has sued Netflix for Plagiarism. He claims the hit series of Netflix, Squid Game to be plagiarized. Netflix has responded.

On Saturday, 14th September, popular OTT platform Netflix was sued by Bollywood film director Soham shah. Soham Shah has claimed that Netflix’s Squid Game is a copy of his movie Luck which was released in 2009. Luck starred Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Shruti Hassan.

What allegations did Soham put on Netflix?

Director Soham Shah accused Netflix and Squid game for copying the storyline of his movie Luck. Soham said that he started writing the story of Luck in the year 2006 and the movie got released in 2009 in the theatres. The movie was released in multiple countries including India, the United Kingdom, the United States and the UAE. Soham says that, Hwang Dong-hyuk the writer of Squid Game has written the story of the series in 2009, which is the same year when the Bollywood movie Luck got released. This coincidence has made the case suspicious of plagiarism.

What did Netflix say in respond?

Netflix has responded to the allegations put by Luck’s director Soham Shah. Netflix denied the claims and said that the story of Squid Game is created by Hwang Dong Hyuk. They said that they are ready to defend the matter.

Netflix’s Spokesperson said, “This claim has no merit. Squid Game was created by and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and we intend to defend this matter vigorously.”

Are the storylines similar?

Bollywood film Luck’s storyline revolves around a group of contestants who agree to play deadly games in order to win a huge price money. Contestants try their luck and as each player gets eliminated by dying, the price money increases for the rest of the competitors. Netflix’s Squid game too revolved around multiple contestants who play childish game that are deadly in order to win the prize money and get rich. As each player gets eliminated, the prize money increases here as well.

Netflix’s Squid Game Starring Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, Jung Ho Yeon, and Wi Ha Jun has also depicted the 456 indebt players to play the deadly games and compete with each other. The winner gets the chance of winning 4.6 billion Won.

Netflix has announced the release dates of the upcoming seasons of Squid Game. The announcement reads, “The real game begins. Squid Game Season 2 coming December 26, only on Netflix. Final Season coming 2025.”
