Srinagar: On Thursday, water bodies, including world famous Dal Lake, and taps froze after the minimum temperature witnessed a further drop and settled at minus 7.6 degree, coldest in December in 11 years in J&K summer capital, Srinagar.
However, sun was out today but normal life was affected because of the low intensity of the heat due to cold breeze. The coldest temperature was witnessed after more than eleven years. The mercury recorded a severe drop during the 40-day-long Chilai-e-Kalan, the severest period of winter which commenced from December 21 and ends on 31 January, next year. Majority water bodies were frozen in Srinagar and outskirts due to drop in the temperature. Stagnated water in open fields, roads and other places has also frozen. Various reports also said that water taps were also frozen, affecting water supply.
The India Meteorological Department spokesman said that weather will remain dry and chilly during the next 24 hours in the city.
