In a moving car, you can see everything from mathematical formulas to the unique world of space. Jaswinder Singh of Patiala in Punjab, has made it his mission to deliver science to every home. To fulfill this objective, Jaswinder created this unique ‘lab on Wheels’ which he has been running for the past 11 years.
He says that once he was in school invigilating a practical exam. There the students told him that their teacher had said “just sign the attendance sheet and come back”. But Jaswinder said the practical exam is 3 hours long. He will only give marks if the students’ performance is worthwhile. During this incident, a thought occurred in his mind, he thought that these children need some practical exposure to science. So he started giving practical lessons to the children, which were very well received.
From this incident, Jaswinder understood that children can be connected to science only through practical methods and not through books. It was at that very moment that he decided to personally take science to those who could not come themselves. He built this lab with his own money and by visiting different institutions, intersections and even temples of the city, he tells people about the majesty of planets, magnets and electricity.
Till date he has organized around 1359 exhibitions in around 11 states of India. He has worked with around 7 lakh people to connect them with science. Not only this, his efforts have been generously rewarded with the highest of accolades. He has received honors like his name in International Book of Record, Pride of Punjab and the Shiksha Ratna Award.
