While Stree revolved around a witch named Stree, its sequel is centered around a new ghost named Sarkate. Sarkate was the one who killed Stree and made her a witch. Since Stree is awake, Sarkate's ghost has also come to life. However, did you know that the Stree franchise is based on real-life urban legend? Below is all about Stree's true story-

What is the urban legend behind Stree 2?

While the makers have indeed infused their own creativity in the storyline, it is a hard fact that the Stree franchise is inspired by Bengaluru's urban legend. For the unversed, Bengaluru in 90s were terrorisied by a woman's ghost.  As per the urban legend, the witch would prey on men after dark, knocking on doors at night to lure them out of their homes. She would often call out by imitating the voice of a woman the victim loves -- his mother, his wife, his sister -- asking him to open the door. It is believed that any man who heeded her request would be found dead within a day. The only way to get rid of her was to call out from inside one's home, "Nale ba" or 'Come tomorrow'. The man was then safe for the night until she came back the next day.

In the movie, the catchphrase of 'Oo Stree Kal Aana' is widely popular. Furthermore, Stree's storyline is based in Chanderi and not Bengaluru. Chanderi is a small town in Madhya Pradesh. Chanderi is surrounded by hills, lakes, and forests and is spotted with several monuments of the Bundela Rajputs and Malwa sultans. It is famous for its ancient Jain Temples.
