In a shocking development, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader & former Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday morning narrowly escaped an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple gate. Sukhbir Badal was serving his punishment given by Akal Takht by being a sevadar with a spear in his hand outside the Golden Temple gate when a man fired at him. 

The man tried to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal with a pistol but he missed due to the men present nearby and security's timely intervention. The shooter was arrested at the spot. Now, as per the information received, the man who has been arrested in the assassination attempt on Sukhbir Badal is Narain Singh Chaura. 

Who is Narain Singh Chaura, the man who tried to assassinate Sukhbir Badal?

Narain Singh Chaura is a resident of Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur. He is a member of Dal Khalsa. In 2013, Narain Singh Chaura was arrested by the Amritsar police. Chaura allegedly had links with the Khalistan Liberation Force and the Akal Federation.

Narain Singh Chaura has faced serious charges. As per reports, Narain Singh Chaura is allegedly involved in about two dozen terrorist activities. Chaura was wanted by the Amritsar police in a case wherein about 2 kg of RDX was recovered from a Maruti car near the railway station in May 2010.

After spending 5 years in jail, Chaura was granted bail by a Taran Taran court in a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He was lodged in Amritsar Central Jail for 5 years before he was released on bail by the Tarn Taran Court. 

HT quoted Police officials in its previous reports, Chaura had crossed over to Pakistan in 1984 and was instrumental in smuggling large consignments of weapons and explosives into Punjab during the initial phase of militancy. While in Pakistan, he allegedly authored a book on guerrilla warfare and 'seditious' literature. He was also accused in the Burail jailbreak case.
