Sikhbir Badal, Sikhbir Badal Resignation, Sikhbir Badal SAD President Resignation: In a massive development from the world of politics in Punjab, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal resigned from his post. Party spokesperson Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema gave this information. He posted about this on social media (X).
Cheema on his X wrote, "The SAD President S Sukhbir Singh Badal submitted his resignation to the Working Committee of the party today to pave the way for the election of new President. He thanked all the party leaders & workers for expressing confidence in his leadership and extending wholehearted support & cooperation throughout the tenure."
A few days back Sukhbir Badal was indicted by Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhs. The Five Sikh High Priests, led by Giani Raghubir Singh, declared Sukhbir Badal ‘Tankhiya’ (guilty of religious misconduct) and asked him to appear before Akal Takht Sahib within 15 days as a common Sikh.
The SAD cabinet from 2007-2017, which was led by Parkash Singh Badal, now dead, was asked to appear before the Akal Takht to explain their actions which caused harm to Sikh ‘panth’. Akal Takht is the Sikh community’s apex religious institution where it can seek an apology for any religious or ethical misconduct.
Notably, Punjab BJP Chief Sunil Jakhar in a long note extended his support to Sukhbir Badal. Jakhar emphasized that while accountability and introspection are necessary for SAD’s leaders, especially for any historical wrongdoings, these actions must be balanced carefully. He acknowledged that the Akal Takht has a role to ensure that individuals within the party are held accountable for past missteps and face appropriate consequences, or “tankhaiya” (punishments). However, he warned that these disciplinary actions should not be so harsh that they disrupt the Akali Dal’s organizational stability or diminish its legacy as the country’s second-oldest political party representing Sikh interests.
