In advance of International Yoga Day on June 21, the Shlloka Joshi Foundation organized a grand event to support yoga practices. Who is Swami Sivananda?

Swami Sivananda was born on 8th August 1896 in the impoverished Sylhet District of Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh). He faced early hardships as an orphan but embarked on a transformative path, seeking solace and knowledge in Kashi under the guidance of Guru Omkarananda.

Mastering yoga and dedicating himself to a life of discipline and service, Swami Sivananda became renowned as a living embodiment of Yoga, Dhyan, and Seva. He devoted himself to teaching yoga on the ghats of Varanasi and providing sustenance to the destitute, including 600 leprosy-affected beggars, ensuring their welfare with meals and essential supplies.

His steadfast commitment to humanitarian causes earned him accolades such as the Yoga Ratna Award, Basundhara Ratan Award, and Padma Shri. Swami Sivananda's life serves as an inspiration, embodying resilience, compassion, and the transformative power of service to humanity.
