Swiggy, a popular online food delivery platform in India, has begun charging a "platform fee" of Rs 2 per food order for all its users. The additional charges are only applicable on food delivery and do not apply to Instamart deliveries. The company has stated that the fee is a nominal flat fee that helps them operate and improve their platform and enhance app features to deliver a seamless app experience. The platform fee is over and above the convenience and handling fees for food delivery.
The charges have reportedly been rolled out initially for customers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and have not yet become effective in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Swiggy has claimed to have processed over 1.5-2 million orders through the day, with Hyderabad residents ordering a whopping 10 lakh biryanis and 4 lakh plates of haleem during the holy month of Ramzan.
In March, the company revealed that it delivered 33 million plates of idlis in the last 12 months, with Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai being the top three cities where idlis were ordered the most. Swiggy typically has over 2.5 lakh restaurant partners enabled on its platform and onboards about 10,000 restaurants every month.
