For the past one week, Tamil Nadu has been witnessing an unusual yet alarming rise in suicide cases of minor girls. On Tuesday, a suicide case of a minor school girl came to the fore in Tamil Nadu making it 4th case in the past 10 days. Tamil Nadu suicide cases spike has alarmed the state government as well as the state police. Recently, a class 11th student hanged herself at home in Tamil Nadu's Sivakasi district on Tuesday.
Reportedly, the 16-year-old from Sivakasi's Virudhanagar returned from school when her parents who are daily wagers were not at home. The girl's grandmother who also used to live with them was not at home following which the girl hanged herself to death. Later, her grandmother found her body hanging from the ceiling while she was still in her school uniform.
The Virudhanagar minor suicide case has raised the tension of the Tamil Nadu state government as incidents like this are on a surge in the State. Coming to the Virudhanagar suicide case, the Sivakasi Police has registered a case and sent the body of the minor girl for a post-mortem. The reason is suicide is yet to be found.
It is pertinent to mention here that a series of suicides by school-going girls in the state has raised several questions regarding possible incidents of harassment with girl students prompting them to take such drastic steps.

In the past 10 days, 4 cases of suicide have emerged. First, On July 13, a 17-year-old girl from Chinnasalem in Kallakurichi was found dead on the hostel premises of her school. Reportedly, the girl died after jumping on the ground from the top floor. In the second incident, a 17-year-old girl hanged herself in the school hostel in Thiruvallur village. Reportedly, her friends had stated that the girl was behaving strangely and used to isolate herself. In the third incident, a class 12 girl named Sivagami was found hanging at her house on July 25. This is an incident from Virudhachalam in the Cuddalore district. According to her parents, the girl was upset over her studies.
Notably, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has already made an appeal to minors and youths to not resort to suicide and to develop a positive attitude towards life. Tamil Nadu CM also asked educational institutions to not be a "mute spectator" to incidents of harassment of any kind of girl students.
Furthermore, Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin asserted that the government would not be a mute spectator to incidents of harassment of any kind of girl students over the suicide case spike of minor girls.
