Ahead of Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, the Income Tax officials today carried out searches at four places in Chennai owned by Sabareesan, the son-in-law of DMK Chief MK Stalin.
Stalin’s daughter Senthamarai is married to Sabareesan, who is said to have a major say in the DMK affairs.
As per reports, the tax department had information regarding the movement of cash related to the election campaign for the April 6 Tamil Nadu Assembly poll, following which they raided the premises of Sabareesan.
Meanwhile, last month also, the Income Tax officials searched former minister and DMK leader E.V. Velu's residence and other premises connected with him.
The DMK leaders and supporters today gathered outside the Sabareesan's home to protest against the raids and support Sabareesan, who has a major role in Stalin’s core team.
A DMK leader who was present at the protest, alleged that the DMK Chief Stalin has a huge fan following in the state, and it’s expected he will form his government in the upcoming assembly elections, therefore on the pretext of the centre government, the IT department conducted raids at the Sabareesan's premises to bring a bad name to party’s image.
Besides, the searches came a day after the party raised questions at a rally near Coimbatore objecting the rise in the assets of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's son Jay Shah, while the IT dept being a mute spectator there.
Meanwhile, there has been no information so far if any assets of Sabareesan have been seized. However, the DMK leader Duraimurugan said that “no matter what, we are not scared of these raids, we know from where it is coming, thus this won't stop our victory”.
