Tarla Dala was a homemaker when she turned into a famous chef starting from her home. Apart from being a chef, she was also a food writer, author, and host of cooking shows. Her first cookbook, 'The Pleasures of Vegetarian Cooking', was published in 1974. Since then, she wrote over 100 books and sold more than 10 million copies. Like the book suggests that Tarla was greatly into vegetarian food, she was also called the Julia Child of Indian vegetarian cooking. As per reports, she was the author of over 17,000 recipes and 170 cookbooks. However, at the age of 77, Tarla Dalal died in her sleep due to a heart attack.
At a time when Indian women used to stay at home and cook for their families by being a housewife, Tarla spread her wings with the support of her husband. After being a famous chef, Tarla traveled around the world and did cooking demonstrations multiple times in the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, and even in the Middle East and Africa. In addition to writing books, she started a cooking magazine called Cooking and More. Moreover, she promoted the most visited Indian cooking website, www.tarladala.com, and a popular television cooking program with a large international audience, "Cook It Up with Tarla Dalal."

Talking about Tarla's early life, she was born and brought up in Pune, Maharashtra, India. In 1960, Tarla was married to Nalin Dalal and relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai). Notably, the character is Nalin is being played by Bollywood actor Sharib Hashmi in Zee5's movie. Tarla Dalal had three children Sanjay, Deepak and Renu with her husband, Nalin. Nalin died in 2005. She lived in an apartment on Napean Sea Road in South Mumbai. On the other hand, Tarla Dala died at her residence on 6 November 2013 following a heart attack.
