First-ever heavy-duty and hydrogen-powered trucks have been launched by Tata Motors, as a step towards sustainable long-distance transportation.

Tata Motors has launched its first-ever heavy-duty trucks, which will be powered by hydrogen; this is marked as a milestone and a significant step towards the sustainable future of India and long-distance cargo transportation.

This historic trail was flagged off by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India - Nitin Gadkari, on March 4, 2025. 

Trial phase of hydrogen trucks - 

According to the officials, for the first 24 months, the trucks will be operated in the trial phase. This service will result in the deployment of 16 advanced hydrogen-powered vehicles with different configurations and capacities. The testing will be conducted on the freight routes of India including Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Jamshedpur, Delhi-NCR and Kalinganagar. 

Notably, the trucks will be equipped with modern technologies - Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cells (H2-FCEV). 

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future: Gadkari

While addressing the people during the event, Minister Gadkari was quoted saying, “Hydrogen is the fuel of the future with immense potential to transform India's transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. Such Initiatives will accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility in heavy-duty trucking and move us closer to an efficient, low-carbon future. I congratulate Tata Motors for taking the lead in this significant step towards enabling hydrogen-powered green and smart transportation.”

Along with this, Executive Director of Tata Motors - Girish Wagh also shared his views about this new service. He stated, “Tata Motors is deeply honored to be at the forefront of driving India's transformation towards greener, smarter, and sustainable mobility. As a company with a long-standing commitment to nation-building, we have continuously embraced innovation to develop mobility solutions that contribute to India's growth and development."

Wagh also mentioned, “Today, with the commencement of these hydrogen truck trials, we are proud to further this legacy by pioneering the transition to clean, zero-emission energy for long haul transportation. We are grateful to the Government of India for their visionary leadership in making this possible, and we remain committed to playing our part in building sustainable, future-ready mobility solutions that will deliver better performance and efficiency."

The newly launched trucks display Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainable and hydrogen-powered transportation. According to official reports, two Tata Prima H.55S trucks and one Tata Prima H.28 will be launched with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). 

These trucks can cover distances ranging between 300-500 km on a single run. The company guarantees eco-friendly, high-performance, and cost-effective transport.
