An awkward case has come to the light from Odisha, a 17-year-old adult who sold his wife to buy a smartphone. In Belpara in the Balangir district, Rajesh Rana sold his wife to a 55-year-old man from Rajasthan for Rs 1.80 lakh.
The Odisha police have detained the accused of selling his wife, the teen, who had been married to his wife for a month, had gone to Rajasthan to work as a brick kiln.
The police rescued the 26-year-old victim from the south-eastern Rajasthan district of Baran. The police also said that the woman was rescued after “difficulties” as villagers were denying to let her go as they had ‘paid’ for her.

Belpara’s inspector Bulu Munda, was quoted saying, “In August, the couple went to Rajasthan via Raipur and Jhansi to work in a brick kiln. However a few days after his new job, the 17-year-old sold off his wife to a 55-year-old man from Baran district for Rs 1.8 lakh.”
Reportedly, he bought a smartphone from the amount he got after selling his money. When he was asked about his wife’s whereabouts, he said that e deserted his wife. His family did not believe him and filed a missing report. Later, it was found that he sold his wife and was arrested.
He was produced in front of the juvenile court and later was sent to the correction room.
