This year’s Academy Awards were hosted in Los Angeles in March to celebrate movies that were released in 2022. Its 95th year didn’t disappoint, and with winners across 23 categories, one film, in particular, stood out from the crowd.
Everything Everywhere All at Once, a comedy sci-fi film, was nominated in eleven categories and took home seven awards. The main character, Evelyn, was played by Michelle Yeoh, who won Best Actress, making her the first Asian woman to win the award. While this stole the show at the Oscars, it’s not the only movie on our watchlist.
With numerous nominations and award wins to consider, it can all be a bit much! Luckily, ExpressVPN's blog piece features a comprehensive flowchart, which maps out the critically acclaimed films from this year's awards ceremony. There are a number of titles, including Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick, both of which were long-awaited by faithful fans of the prequels within the respective franchises. So, while you wait for this year's motion pictures to drop, there are plenty of groundbreaking spectacles to catch up on.
2023 releases that have been big hits so far
We’re only a few months into 2023, and we’ve had some blockbusters on our screens already. One of the first highly anticipated films released in 2023 was Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which made its way to the big screen in February. The third and final film comes after the first was released in 2012, and the second in 2015. The official movie trailer can be watched on IMDB’s website and gives a sneak peek at Mike taking to the stage once more. Inspired by the true events of Magic Mike Live, a show that made its way to theaters in Las Vegas in 2017 and London in 2018, the film tells the story of how actor Channing Tatum launched his live shows.
Another big movie released in February was Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Based on Marvel comics, this is the third film in the Ant-Man series and sees famous actor Paul Rudd portray the superhero.

While it's been an exciting year in the cinemas so far, there’s a lot to come. With movies ranging from animation to action, and comedy to horror, Rotten Tomatoes has a line-up that is nothing short of exciting.
Speaking of animation, the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, released in 2018, is set to see its story continue with a second film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Due to be released this year, people will be able to watch part one of the film, with part two to be announced at a later date. For those that like to see action played by real characters, the tenth film in the Fast and Furious franchise is expected to drop this year. Called Fast X, this is another one that will be split into two parts.
Moving away from action-packed stories, childhood classics like The Little Mermaid and Barbie have been in the making and, after what feels like a long time coming, will be making their way to our big screens this year.
With over 400 movies released in the US and Canada in 2022, we’re excited to see what 2023 has to bring.
