In an unusual episode that unfolded in Bengaluru, where a team of doctors were successful in retrieving a gold chain that a thief had swallowed after snatching it from a woman during a tussle with her.
The dramatic incident occurred in MT Street near KR Market, central Bengaluru, on Saturday night, as reported by Deccan Herald.
The 20-year-old thief was fed with bananas and a laxative by the doctors to recover the chain.
Victim Hema was wearing a mangalya gold chain that weighed over 70 grams and a 12-gram pendant necklace when three men entrapped her around 8.50 pm.
One suspect Vijay alias Lovely tried to snatch her chain but Hema gave him a counter by holding onto the chain with one hand and clasped him with another hand. She fell after the attacker pushed her, however, she didn't let him lose and at the same time, as she raised the alarm, two passersby noticed the attack.
Attacker Vijay could not escape as the street was just five feet wide and by the time had been crowded so in a ploy he swallowed the good chain. Ultimately, the crowd could catch hold of him and he was beaten by the public.

The area police inspector, BG Kumaraswamy directed the officers to take Vijay to a hospital as he was badly injured by the public beatings.
Vijay's X-ray report surprised everyone when it showed a metal object inside his body. However, it was not sure if the object was a gold chain that Vijay had swallowed. The victim thought the china had fallen somewhere amid the scuffle.
Initially, Vijay argued that the metal object seen in the X-ray report was a bone he swallowed while eating biryani.
But the police doubted his claim and promised that he would be freed if he told the truth. Vijay then told the cops that he had swallowed the chain after it fell down as he didn't want the public or police to find it and return it to the victim.
Doctors gave the chain snatcher was given Enema, a syrup used to treat constipation and bananas.
Eventually, the chain was retrieved through faeces.

Based on Vijay's statement, Police have arrested his associate named Sanjay, 25 while a third accomplice is absconding.
In a similar incident from 2019, the Mumbai police had harboured the same technique to recover the gold chain a thief had swallowed. Police ordered a basket full of bananas and the thief was forcefully fed four dozens of bananas after an X-Ray showed the metallic object stuck inside his stomach. Later, police told the thief to wash it with phenyl. He was then produced before a magistrate and was taken into custody.
