Indian Railways successfully conducted the trial run of the Vande Bharat Express from Katra to Srinagar, marking the completion of technical inspections for the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).

The trial run, carried out on Saturday, covered the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station to Srinagar route via the iconic Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.

Designed for extreme climatic conditions, the Vande Bharat train can operate at temperatures as low as -30°C. It features advanced heating systems to prevent freezing in water and bio-toilet tanks, ensuring passenger comfort during the harsh winters of the valley.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the Vande Bharat train, a hallmark of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 'Make in India' initiative, has garnered global interest. These semi-high-speed trains include cutting-edge amenities like Kavach safety technology, accessible toilets for persons with disabilities, and integrated Braille signage.

The first passenger service is set to commence in February, with Prime Minister Modi expected to inaugurate the train from Katra station.

This railway project is anticipated to revolutionize travel in Jammu and Kashmir by boosting tourism, horticulture, trade, and education. The all-weather connectivity will also provide relief to residents who face travel disruptions during winter when the Jammu-Srinagar highway often shuts due to snow and rainfall.
